Sieving
Bernhard, my professor, told me that lab work would be like following recipes. This has been true. And like all kitchen work, for every utensil you get dirty, you have to clean it. Many objects can go straight into the dishwasher, some need to be pre-washed, and others, like this stack of 36 sieves, need to be individually scrubbed. So, if anyone asks what I'm doing in Germany, tell them that I'm a Dishwasher!

You know, were gonna have to do some dishes when I get home...WOOOT WOOT!
ReplyDeleteHope you don't get dishpan hands.
ReplyDeleteooh that reminds me! A really catchy punk song I love!
ReplyDeleteDishpan hands and pots and pans and ashtrays full of butts
Pearldiving's the life for me, I'm such a little putz
The heat, the slime, I've never been on time
I'm soaking wet, I'll never save a dime
Born to do dishes, I was born to do dishes
I was born to do dishes and my mom's really bummed out
I was born to do dishes fuck you, I'm just so proud
I was born to do dishes and my mom's really bummed out
The heat, the slime, I've never been on time
I'm soaking wet, I'll never save a dime
Wow! What a song! I gotta hear that one!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking more along the lines of dishwater hands can be rough to hold. ;)
ReplyDeletehow true this is. I spend a couple hours a week washing out my collectors and all the little 50 and 15 mL tubes for my samples. You're lucky you sound like you have a dishwasher of some kind that at least some of your stuff can go in.
ReplyDeleteNow imagine 2.5 more of these sieve stacks. Yup. 3 sieves for each of the 42 samples. That's a total of 126 sieves. 129 when I screw up and have to redo a sample (Don't let me talk to you when I'm supposed to be concentrating on my work).
ReplyDeleteThe dishwasher is very useful. Remember those pictures of the little bottles with the funnels and filters on them? I went through tons of little containers like that and thankfully all I had to do was acetone off the permanent marker label, swirl with water, and put in the dishwasher. For the containers which we put in the drying closet and get sample baked on them (be it on glass or plastic), there is a bucket full of this amazing potion (Extran and Water) that makes the sample come off pretty easy after about 24 hours. I didn't know the purpose of this water-filled bucket until recently and always wondered why we kept around this purple bucket full of dirty water (dirty because we reuse the magic potion several times over).
